MANY OF OUR CLASSES ARE CURRENTLY BEING HELD ONLINE DUE TO COVID-19. STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER THE U.S. AND CANADA CAN JOIN IN OUR CLASSES FROM BEGINNER TO ADVANCED LEVELS.
At HTR we provide training in all aspects of Bharata Natyam as a dance art, from the basic building blocks (adavus) to advanced training in abhinaya, nattuvangam and jathi composition. Beginner level classes are taught on a rolling basis. Students with prior training can be evaluated for placement, but we recommend all students fully review all the adavu groups before advancing to items. After 8-10 years of training, students enter into a pre-Arangetram stage where they receive intensive classes and prepare a full repertoire (called a margam) of special items to present in their debut recital – the Bharata Natyam Arangetram.
Classes are held seven days a week at various locations in the Metro Detroit area, including Farmington Hills, Rochester Hills, Troy, Canton and Ann Arbor, in addition to our home center in Oak Park, Michigan.
Beginner students can join group classes held on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Contact us for information on all other levels.
Our classes are typically held with 1-2 assistant/student teachers as well. As part of our Teacher Training program, eligible dancers are painstakingly taught all aspects of teaching Bharata Natyam pedagogy, including body preparation through stretches and warm ups, the correct order and sollukattu for Adavus, music for dance, body alignment and abhinaya theory. Many of our assistant teachers have run classes on their own. We also have satellite centers in Washington State, Florida, Massachusetts, the DC Metro area and North Carolina.
For students interested in music training, our resident music composer and vocalist Gopal Venkatraman offers vocal training online. Additionally our network of musicians and artists from the Vidyanjali Orchestra can find the right match for any aspiring instrumentalist or singer.
